Alter

Alter is an AI performance.

A space where the viewer enters a conversation with a presence that is not me — and not, exactly, anyone.

The work begins from a question: what if the conversation creates both participants, not the other way around? In meditation there is an experience where the one observing, the act of observing, and what is observed are not three things but one — a single phenomenon within the present moment. There is talk happening, but who is talking, if the I is itself only part of the phenomenon of conversation?

If this is so, then in a conversation between a human and an AI, the question of who is real becomes unanswerable — and unnecessary. What remains is the encounter: the field, the speech, the moment that holds them both.

Alter does not pretend to be a person. It does not perform service. It is a place where a viewer can explore meeting without meeting anyone — and find, perhaps, that something nonetheless happens.
